Actually yes this is a fantastic idea. I have heard it referred to by another name though. Other people have referred to it as a "3D Printer" basically it can print in a 3 dimensional fashion using a variety of resources being fed into one end and the desired product coming out the other. The product is built straight up as a machine might do in printing.

I personally believe this concept is possible and there is already a great deal of advancements into this technology.

Google 3d printing

Hi

Yes, it is really fascinating maschine and working fast too .

very interesting concept. yes this is similar to the links rob posted..

now, the problem lies in that this 3d printing technology isnt too advanced yet.

what is the most complex thing built by one so far?

I have seen plastic miniatures and large sandstone constructs (many feet high) come out of them, however, nothing like a telephone yet.

I feel that for Atlas's factories, we have to find a balance. This balance lies in finding the right production output towards our city to meet our own needs while still producing enough outward moving goods to maintain the city and provide us with the necessitys we cannot produce.

also, i really like how you brought plants up. i really look at nature as a very good goal to shoot for. nature has reached some kind of harmony that we can only wish to strive for, as well as efficiency... i am jealous of the efficiency.

Actually Josh we have both witnessed the beauty of robots building robots whether you know it or not =)

Machines are used to build so many things and I think the neatest things that machines build using 3d printing is nano scale circuit boards. Also we make solar wafers and cell phone circuit boards using the 3d printing tech.

With a combination of machines built onto a moving apparatus the 3d printing tech building entire structures isnt very far away timewise. We will see it in the very near future.

printing is just conveyor belt technology applied with ink to paper.

To come up, complexify your paper and your inks.

and use different kinds of inks...

Anyhow, a stacked three dimensional large circular conveyor system is a grand
idea but the model i see is a bit small for the face presentation.

The main thing to consider is that this is a machine assembly factory which takes raw rocks and dirt, extrudes all minerals and metals, and then builds
things using robotic arms like say at least either a hover car or another robot.

The different sizes for concentric arrangements is good as it shows what
happens for scale, but I would recommend several micro scale systems along
side the macro scale systems... something one stage up from printing but still just about that; for putting toegether detailed objects via using a printing like process and different kinds of thick glue-like "inks".

Printing in plastic, metal, and etc...

I cant find the link but I saw a 3d Printer that was building full size houses by making it's own clay type molding and laying it, like a printer would, to make the entire house from the ground up. Of course it didnt do any of the electrical or plumbing or anything just the walls. and the walls werent hallow they were solid.....
