There's really no need to create an entire new OS for use in Atlas. This derivative of Linus (Ubuntu) is free, safe, and user friendly.

i really agree.

what strobl was doing in the past was practically making a custom skin for some version of linux.

i mean, there really isnt any reward for the massive amount of work to make such a mod.

therefore I would say, until something better arises, that we just stick with these already refined operating derivatives of linux.

Definitely. I never saw any progress for what he was doing and there is plenty of open source available already.

i would recommend ubuntu for just about any pc these days, it an operating system and it just works, i switched to it about a year ago after finally getting sick of the never ending dramas with windows xp then 7
the headaches you get with windows that you pay good money for truly become a joke when you can plug just about anything to a ubuntu box now and almost everything works
so far every usb stick printer network card webcam even so far that i had that either wasnt supported under windows 7 or xp or simply just didn't work with it for 1 of 1000 reasons that the end user can't solve quickly i onlt run windows 7 on the netbook now and the sole reason there is that some of the specialist software uses alot of the windows dll and apis, and won't function properly under wine( which is what you use to run windows programs in ubuntu )
anyone can get a block of land grow food and survive and probably for the rest of their natural life , but to "live" is a whole different thing

Sadly I find Linux often doesn't work for what I want, but it is moving slowly towards being usable for me, though rather complicated to use compared with Windows.

At some point, our own OS would be nice though, as I hear that Linux isn't written with effiency and speed in mind and is rather a mess technically speaking.

Listening to various experts, FORTH CPU's look promising:

Most creators make for their use. Since Linux is open source all we would need is someone to change a few things around to suite us better. For now, any free OS is better then the outrageous cost and fallibility of Windows.

Having used a Unix operating system in the work environment (which is dead similar to Linux) I can say that I really do prefer such an environment to windows, and I feel that a public trained in linux would be more educated in the computer field in general. Why is that? because of the terminal
in order to use the terminal, you have to script in the command line, which is really fun and also is very powerful.
thats my 2 cents on this topic

For a community that is highyl dependent on energy being generated locally, rather than imported one of the key things a compute system cando it monitoring.

Also you have automation a building and in the farming. Here there are so many open source tools now available.

This is a topic that hasn't been touched for a while. I propose, if all are in agreement, we slash this out for a while. For now, anything we do can be used on one of the many free OS's out there currently. When the city is built and needs tighter, more proprietary security we can further discuss our own OS.
