The land is an air field that has been in my extended family for a few generations, unsure really of the back story, but i believe one of my grandfather's brothers restored old aircraft there. Several years ago the runway had apparently become unusable and he decided to retire. When he died it was left to his son, who as far as i know lives in mane. He has no use for it and he has contacted some of us expressing a desire to let the property go. I believe his wishes are to have one of us carry on the family business, so to speak. However, the cost to have a runway put in that meets modern FAA standards is most likely prohibitive. I have seen this property once about three years ago when i was in Nevada. I had herd stories about it and i just decided to have a look. I remember it had a well, small water tower, a few good sized hangars that were in assorted states of dilapidation, each with diesel generators, some tool room equipment, an office, some aircraft grade scrap, and that's about it. the "road" that lead to it was challenging in the jeep i was driving and surprisingly long. So just about anyone who looked at the property would basically just consider it an isolated collection of garbage, and that it may be. However, it does seem to have the necessities of life and some of the necessities of industry. I know very little about agriculture, and i have no idea if food crops can be grown in the surrounding soil, but i thought perhaps some kind of hydroponic setup might be installed in one of the hangars, and there is plenty of room for livestock. So a small group could sustain themselves, and connect to the internet via satellite to educate and entertain themselves, and connect to the outside world.
There is a significant amount of effort required to acquire this property. Not least of which convincing an elderly relative i barely know that I would be able to use it in a productive manner, there are also taxes, titles, probably some kind of hazardous waste cleanup from all the oil and fuel, ect. So I need to find support first in the form of skilled aid before i can begin anything.
I'd rather not give the location of my families unprotected property. I'm sure you can understand that, What I was hoping for was to find individuals to join me, start a micro society, begin some kind of industry, and try to seed the Venus Project. These individuals would have to be highly skilled, and talented, as I'm sure that very few people could be supported by this location at the onset, and taking anyone on who could not contribute significantly would vastly limit our likelihood of success. These would not have to be professionals of course, and i would prefer that they not be. High level hobbyists always have a fanatical passion and drive about their hobbies than high level professionals seem to lack. I do realize that people of this level of skill who are willing to leave their lives and go hang out in the desert are rare at best, but Atlas, Venus, and TZM seem to be the best place to find them.
I Also feel that we all need to stop waiting for this "great collapse" it's not like some day, a few years down the road people are going to turn on some loudspeakers and say "Ladies and gentlemen, society has just fallen apart, proceed to freak the fuck out". Human beings are highly adaptive, and capitalism is a perfect machine who's only function is survival. Fossil fuels, for instance, we still use them because they are still more economically feasible than alternative energy, other options are out there but the bottom line doesn't add up. We are not going to run out of oil and coal all at once, it will simply get more and more scarce, and as that scarcity increases, so will the cost, thus making alternative energies the better choice. the planet will smell better, but we will still be slaves to the dollar. Global warming, it is inevitable, the earth has a natural cycle of warming and cooling, and from the fossil records it appears that we are at the end of an unusually cold snap. it's possible that we are increasing the temperature artificially ourselves slightly, but it will still get hot if we stop. this may increase the oceanic levels. this will happen slowly and those on the coasts will gradually move inland, the world will be different, but we will still be slaves. The only way to end capitalism is to show humanity that there is another option and show examples of it WORKING. People are inherently leery of risk, and there are very few people who are able to set those fears aside and put forth an effort to follow their ideals in the face of absurd odds. I just hope I can find a few of those people.
