i just want to let you all know,i think about the possibilities the atlas initiative group is very difficult to start or stalled? THIS IS THE ALTERNATIVE, http://seasteading.org/about-seasteading/introduction they already gathered about 1 million plus fund for it. i think join together and work as a team is easier than starting alone?

To further the establishment and growth of permanent, autonomous ocean communities enabling innovation with new political and social systems.

“Currently, it is very difficult to experiment with alternative social systems on a small scale; countries are so enormous that it is hard for an individual to make much difference. The world needs a new frontier, a place where those who wish to experiment with building new societies can go to test out their ideas. Unfortunately, all land is already claimed, so we look to the oceans.”

“None of us really knows. But the possibilities are pretty amazing. We’ve got the potential to create a world where people live as long as they want, where scarcity is a thing of the past, where the human brain and body are radically enhanced, where friendly AIs smarter than any of us help us achieve our goals.

“And there are also some darker possibilities.

“Humanity+ is about helping humanity get the future right. Not just the technology, but making the technology really work for all of us, and those who come after.

this does seem very interesting, although wouldnt you agree that it brings alot of problems that land based communities wouldnt have?

yes - you have complete control over your community. However, imagine transportation or recieving of materials? - more expensive

imagine the engineering costs to handle storms and to support large sea structures - more expensive

imagine all of the institutions built into place by the current system which you would not be able to take advantage of - electric grid, water, internet.

while such a sea based city can exist, it would be more expensive as such, and for what? not paying some small amount of property taxes?

I like the idea, but I dont know how right it is for our group.

We do also try to gain support and affiliates with several other groups. It may be a good idea for us to become closer.

wow this is quite interesting, especialyl when you here it pitches this way:

"Country startup" - he has an excellent point.

My opinions:
1. Floating structure is also being proposed by japan now also. I saw a design a few weesk ago.

2. Solves Property problem.

3. Solves Tax problem. You need to be 200 miles off shore to be in international waters.
- technically though your tax domiciliary becomes where you were born if you have no resident tax domicile. So technically you would have to pay tax to wherever you were born.
This is assuming you had any tax to pay.

Big problems though are:
1. Cost for structure is just so much higher due to salt, water, structural rigidity requirements
2. Claustrophobic
3. Food growing area is so small, and so relies on very sophisticated an efficient techniques.

If the structural issues can be solved to make it much cheaper it is a reasonable option though. Some serious thinking outside the box required to get over that hump though.

Gerard

I saw that a while back. Tried to contact Patri on facebook (no response), tried to talk on their forums (basically, no responses). It seems that they haven't made much headway and only received their money from one lucky grant.

I still hope that Atlas will have a "research vessel" floating city at some point.
