I think this idea is perfect. Done properly it would greatly reduce the land needed to have a separate agricultural area. Not to mention it would make each individual partly responsible for their own food supply. Of course, not everyone would be able or wish to do this, but most excess of food produced can be handed out in a local produce marketplace. I will post a few links to how many English companies have used the concept of biofilters to remove harmful bacteria from their pools and not need harmful chemicals like chlorine.

I imagine our food production would look very similar to this:
Anyone find out more on the power consumption stats and if these ideas are viable for the limited space? I would imaging it shouldn't be much of a problem, especially if the entire city is efficient on power consumption.
An idea for the trees would be to get some of the newer breeds of genetically engineered fruit trees. I have seen things from ones that are self pollinating, to as big as a house, to having many varieties of fruit on a single tree (how convenient to have five types of apples come from one tree). Not to mention the the roofs of every building can be made into a green roof for produce production or leisure space (parks and gardens). This would help keep the temperature stable inside the structure as well.
There are also types of fruit that have been spliced with genes to form extra proteins and nutrients (one fruit can have a daily supply of vitamins and nutrients).
www.globalissues.org/issue/188/genetically-engineered-food -this is a good point as well. As far as the genetically larger or vitamin enriched crops. This doesn't apply to the trees that produce several varieties since these are not genetically altered, but spliced.
This link also goes on about the aquaponics ideas in other threads, which I think can be a great idea. It's just difficult to decide which choices of crop production will fit our limited size society the best. www.popsci.com/cliff-kuang/article/2008-09/farming-sky
*I think I put this in a previous thread, but I'm saying it again. We should be able to easily produce excess food within our society. The excess amount should be brought to the city and given away to the homeless a few times a week. This is great for them and great for PR. Mostly, we shouldn't let our excess through ingenuity go to waste.

Good post btw.
