Seems like natural surrounds would be best. Adobe/Rammed Earth is everywhere down in Arizona and New Mexico. The Earthship is a great idea for a self sufficient building recycling what is available is even better. I believe we can build on ideas like this with current technologies and automation to become more efficient with these ideas, just throwing ideas out there. lets brainstorm.

We will use some earthship concepts but we also need durable and low maintenance, I wonder how hard it is to make bricks? I know they do it in Mexico. Bricks would be durable and low maintenance.

im really turned off by these earthy building materials

i am a real fan of creating a city which can be compared to any modern industrialized city - except with a green twist on it

we would seem like a cheap excuse for a city if we used recycled tires, earth, straw, and adobe to construct our buildings. if we even built some stuff out of adobe, it wouldnt fit into place when we added large scale construction, hence removing from the cohesive design of the city as a whole.

making bricks is pretty easy depending on your starting materials.

I have made bricks before, both out of clay that made it easy and out of dirt
which had to be mixed with a congealing agent.

In both cases the bricks we made were quite a bit larger than the bricks
you normally see- like the size of cinder blocks.

Similar.

Though I could see a reason to have earth sheltered buildings, whose main aim would be hide much of the look of industrialisan.

I would also have a concern that so much soil being put to use in buildings, that could otherwise be valuable for agriculture use.

Never a less, if these buildings are of very low cost, they maybe useful in the early stages of development, but discontinued later on once we can afford something different.

yes, we agree. I hope they don't pack actual soil, and that wouldn't make much sense since it would remain biologically active.

I like the idea of robotically constructed houses using 3D printers.

If the rooms are constructed in a factory they can be shipped out
and assembled like lego blocks.

All the plumbing and wiring can be built in,
and each house can have modular everything,
notably a modular computer
and a big screen TV / computer monitor built into the wall.

Once this assembly line got going,
I really don't think the per unit cost would be that high,
and the add-on interior or exterior modules would be optional.
It would be a little bit like ordering a Dell computer.

In the transition period,
these units could provide massive poverty relief around the globe
and shelter for disaster victims.

modular and recyclable designs would be preferable of course

An army of small mobile 3D printers could print a city on site, once the technology is developed.

It would be better if a city was designed to last a thousand years than be recycleable, after a thousand years the technology to recycle any old building material will exist.
