Summary from Zeitgeist forum

*****

fingerprint or retinal scanners for computer access for internal computers - IE: one inside of a laboratory or the central computer for a building.

******

Magnetic cards seems a little safer. Has worked for years, and no one is going to go through all the trouble of breaking them just to get into a school/hospital. That would serve them no purpose for how much of a pain it would be to fake. That's what they used at the hospital I worked at, and it can be implemented in the public transportation vehicles, houses, everything. Plus I'm not a fan of having my fingerprints and retinal scan on record somewhere.

******

do these cards allow for different levels of security? obviously if we give someone a card for access to the mainframe of one building, we dont want them to walk into the main water building or something.

******

They can be set up with different levels. For instance, in the hospital I worked at my badge allowed me through most of the hospital, but not the prenatal section that has very strict security. Now, people in the city shouldn't really have any restrictions as they may be switching jobs, thus buildings, at regular intervals (or even randomly if not needed there that day). I envision being able to just walk from job to job (until they are more automated) and doing that job that day if you feel. If it's full you can ask someone there to take a break if they have been there a while and you take their spot. We should have a great surplus of man power and finding enough people to run necessary stations at that time shouldn't be an issue, therefor easier to have such a lackadaisical attitude about it.

Here is my opinion.

Cameras everywhere. I am also for microphones. If we have a problem, we will not use 'juries' to determine who hit, hurt, stole, vandalized, abused, or otherwise did harm to someone. We must have security cameras that (just as in a casino) catches all events and allows us to act without question in these matters. I have heard the "this wont happen in our city" but the reality is, it will, I am sorry to say. And the question is not will it happen, but how do we determine who is at fault and deal with them appropriately when it does. Most of these are city banning events and we better be sure, video is the only way. Cameras are cheap so that is not a problem.

As far as determining who is who, since we will need to track usage of 'stuff', in the city, this will not just control access to facilities (computer room) but also track supply, clothing, sundry items even food. While everything is free, we have a due diligence to determine where and how these supplies are used. For example, one person may get two shirts a day and sell them to the outside world, this is a huge violation of our mission, but only through monitoring will we be sure to detect this (or other resource abuse). Again, I know we will screen for this misuse of resources, and we will have right minded people, but someone is going to do this and its only a matter of when. Once again, we must be sure about resource abuse and handle it appropriately (no juries, just action based on facts).

NOte that since the city will have tourists (who want to buy an Atlas Shirt), whatever method we use will apply to them as well (to hit their guest account).

We should empower ourselves by empowering the technology to recognize, interact and make decisions with us. Passive body/facial and voice recognition combined with verbal conversation is the least intrusive. It is a question of trust, in ourselves and in our technology. Feeling secure is what security should mean, not enforcement. I don't want to live in a airport.

I agree, I don't want cameras everywhere as I would think of it as a privacy violation.

That's not the point. Generally, we are not too afraid of anyone inside the city doing anything due to the process it takes to become a resident in Atlas (although things can happen). We will also be liaison to many visitors and public events. Since we really don't want to have to deal with having police within the city, the best way to avoid a problem is to have a record of as much as possible.

Now, I agree it may seem a bit extreme. It's definitely something for further discussion. At the very least we will need cameras pointing outwards from the city at all times in all directions. I think it's important to know what's going on around us and for protection from the outside.

Yea, external security should include radar, satellite, and or drone/remote telemetry and other visual and non-visual perimeter sensors. Internal sensors and communications infrastructure would be seperate components of an integrated system.
