We will want to use hydroponics and aeroponics to maximize produce production with minimal resources. Special structures, perhaps even the outside of the living structure, will be equipped with growing areas. Potatoes and many other plants grow 60% faster with 90% less water using aeroponics.

Advantages of Vertical Farming (not all listed below apply to our project)
*Copied from the vertical farm project website

Year-round crop production; 1 indoor acre is equivalent to 4-6 outdoor acres or more, depending upon the crop (e.g., strawberries: 1 indoor acre = 30 outdoor acres)
No weather-related crop failures due to droughts, floods, pests
All VF food is grown organically: no herbicides, pesticides, or fertilizers
VF virtually eliminates agricultural runoff by recycling black water
VF returns farmland to nature, restoring ecosystem functions and services
VF greatly reduces the incidence of many infectious diseases that are acquired at the agricultural interface
VF converts black and gray water into potable water by collecting the water of
evapotranspiration
VF adds energy back to the grid via methane generation from composting non-edible
parts of plants and animals
VF dramatically reduces fossil fuel use (no tractors, plows, shipping.)
VF converts abandoned urban properties into food production centers
VF creates sustainable environments for urban centers
VF creates new employment opportunities
We cannot go to the moon, Mars, or beyond without first learning to farm indoors on earth
VF may prove to be useful for integrating into refugee camps
VF offers the promise of measurable economic improvement for tropical and subtropical LDCs. If this should prove to be the case, then VF may be a catalyst in helping to reduce or even reverse the population growth of LDCs as they adopt urban agriculture as a strategy for sustainable food production.
VF could reduce the incidence of armed conflict over natural resources, such as water and land for agriculture

I just heard the statistic that aeorponics uses 90% less water and 60% less fertilizers then conventional methods of farming. It's a little more expensive to set up initially, but makes up for it very quickly.

We should combine the vertical farm with aquaponics so that we can also get fish and algae's from this system also, turning every level of the building into an artificial rain forest where is rains 24/7. The fish and food would grow so fast we could probably reduce growing times to fractions of what they are in soil or hydroponics.

Not to mention much easier to set up rather than producing top soil, making sure the ground can actually grow food, etc. That would definitely take ages. Took Auroville years. So yes, I believe with the hydroponics well-utilized, it'll bring crop growth to a very fast start.

If this inspiration carries on into tomorrow I might draw some pictures of it

I'd love to see them.

The other benefit to farming without soil is near zero pests. Farming soil provides a living environment for pests.

I guess this is why im so impatient. We know we have the food capability. Or it appears that we do anyway?

Thanks.

Some of these systems are quite expensive.
