In biology today we were discussing types of fungi. Apparently, a certain type in the classification of mycorrhizae fungi live in symbiotic relationships with many plants. About 70-80% of our current cash crop production has this form of fungi on it already, which helps give nutrients to the host plant and even protect it from many pathogens. These, along with endophytes, can help maximize our food production and lessen the threat of plant pathogens wiping out our crops.

Watching a special on agriculture, an interesting agricultural design was brought up. The Three Sisters was the name Native Americans gave to combining beans, corn, and squash crops. The beans bring in nitrogen into the ground, which fertilized the corn, and thorny squash protected the crops from some animals. The concept of complimentary crops saves the need of crop rotation and fertilization.
